How Fiverr Helped Me Build My Writing Skills and Portfolio

Many of us are looking to supplement our incomes in these times of rising costs. Thankfully, we live in an era where we have many opportunities to earn extra money. We can even make money in our sleep if we have set up the right products and services through various channels.

After the pandemic hit, many of us realized how unstable our “stable” jobs are. Few industries will always endure (education, healthcare, evolving technology). Then some will struggle if they do not have a strong and loyal customer base.

Finding the right strategy for extra money

Finding another job wasn’t the answer for me. I had to question what I needed to do to have more control over my income. Having a master’s degree is great, but it comes with two issues. One is the debt of education, which can take years to pay off. Two, whomever you work for puts a cap on the amount of money you can earn based on one’s degree. Even if I got my doctorate (which I will never get), it would still limit my earning potential if I worked for someone.

I decided to find something I liked doing that I was skillful in. I’ve always wanted to write. So, I bought a digital program about making money on Fiverr. So, I made my profile and focused on writing in the education and edtech space. Without advertising, I was booking gigs regularly and starting on my journey.

How Fiverr Helped Me

I give 100% effort no matter what, and I put a lot of work into those first few gigs. I currently have a 5-star rating and I’m a Level 1 seller. It’s been a good experience and has made me commit to improving my craft. I study the best copywriting practices and try to write daily to sharpen my prose.

The site takes 20% of the payment and any tips one earns. So being on Fiverr has been great and gives me a greater ability to earn my worth. But the goal was to get my start and move off the platform so I can fully control all the money I earn.

If you are a writer, graphic designer, or website builder you should consider Fiverr and other freelance websites. This will help to ease your transition to something more independent. Or, if you just want to make a little extra, Fiverr is a great place to start building your portfolio.
